Baritone Tommi Hakala has spent the early part of 2018 concentrating on interesting and many-sided opera productions. He performed with the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra in a concert production of Beethoven’s Fidelio. Then he moved to Turin, Italy and the Teatro Regio Torino, where he appeared as Jochanaan (John the Baptist) in Richard Strauss’ Salome. This year, Hakala has also performed the role of Amfortas in Sinfonieorchester Basel’s concert production of the 3rd Act of Wagner’s Parsifal. He will perform the complete role at the Finnish National Opera this coming May.
Hakala is an awaited artist at Lohja Soi. He has been invited to perform at the festival in previous years, but the baritone’s schedule has always been too busy. On August 8th, Hakala and his friend, pianist Kristian Attila, take the stage in a concert titled World Renowned Baritone. The duo has performed together since the mid-1990s and their recordings and concerts have been met with a great deal of enthusiasm. On August 10th, Hakala joins soprano Johanna Rusanen to celebrate Oskar Merikanto’s 150th anniversary with a concert programme that includes music from both Merikanto and Toivo Kuula. Hakala states that the concert offers familiar vocal music that is a great match with the Finnish summer and Finnish tastes.
